iPhone Duo Simulator: Testing and optimizing your SwiftUI app

A brand new device means a brand new Simulator. This time, it's not a simple iteration on the iPhone sim, but a truly new type of simulator that can fold! How it works and how you can use it to adapt your app is covered in this week's article.

WHAT I'M WORKING ON

What the new iPhone Duo Simulator means for me

I bet many of you are actively working on adding iPhone Duo support to your apps. I do too, but a much bigger challenge came up.

RocketSim's capturing feature suddenly has to deal with a 3D device. It can fold, rotate, and appears more often in landscape: a single-dimension video recorder is no longer sufficient.

As soon as I got my hands on the new Simulator, I started playing around with adding support. I managed to read the hinge angle in real time, capture it consistently during a recording, and reapply it to create beautiful captures afterward.

Another challenge is adding support for touches, grids, and rulers. The screen rect is quite dynamic and no longer easy to reproduce. RocketSim overlays on top of Device Hub, so I have to find a way to recalculate the real dimensions.

Let's say "challenge accepted", I'm already getting close to a first working version. Meanwhile, I've been able to submit RocketTrace to the App Store, so it's been busy days!
