Issue 43
Jan 05, 2021

It's January: the month of blue Monday, cold weather in the Netherlands, and the start of vaccinations in many countries. It's the month in which we can look forward to what hopefully becomes a better year than 2020.

Although my goals are not set in stone yet, I have been looking ahead to set goals for 2021. My first conference talk is scheduled and I really hope to schedule some more (hopefully in-person) in the upcoming months.

In this week's blog post I'll cover my results of last year combined with my targets for this year. It also contains a list of most-read articles that are worth a read if you didn't yet.

For now, I want to give a shoutout to my SwiftLee Supporters that have been supporting me for a few months now. It feels incredibly special to have individuals supporting my contributions to the community and they form a great motivator to write another 52 articles this year 😉

Oh, and, as a thank you for subscribing, you can find a few discounts for great Swift books and courses from friends. For free. For you! Thank you.

Enjoy this week's SwiftLee Weekly!

THIS WEEK'S BLOG POST

2020 has been a special year with ups and downs but most of all: a lot of great content. In this week's blog post I'm looking back at last year, lists all my achievements and statistics, while also listing the most read articles on SwiftLee.

TWEET OF THE WEEK

An interesting thread by Ryan Nystrom describing the story behind IGListKit, the framework used heavily within the current Instagram app. It’s interesting to read how certain decisions can lead to a popular framework with currently over 11K stars on GitHub.

CURATED FROM THE COMMUNITY

CODE

Although it’s still a work in progress and I’m not sure whether I would use it myself I figured some of you might be interested to see this. It’s a lightweight text editor for Swift, written in Swift, build by Ali A. Hilal.
The start of a new year always comes with date-related bugs. This is a friendly reminder to check your date formats to make sure you’re doing the right thing. An interesting thread followed by an answer from ކާމްޗޯރް ކަރަމްޗާރީ!
I really liked this blog post by Swift By Sundell using key paths in such a way that it becomes a really nice way of filtering data.

NEWS

This week, Donny Wals released his book on Core Data. If you’re working a lot with Core Data this book is definitely worth a buy as it’s up to date with the latest recommended advice. If that's not enough, you can also check out my resources which have been an inspiration for Donny.
Paul Hudson opened up the nominations for this year’s Swift Community Awards. It would be great if you could participate and it will be nice for you to find out which resources were top in 2020 after the nominations are announced.

PRESENTATIONS

Although I didn’t see the talk itself, I found reading the slides super valuable too. It’s a great overview of Simone Civetta where we are today regarding CI solutions for Mobile.

VIDEO

I recently found out Shubham Singh is sharing some great time-lapse videos of animations created in SwiftUI. You can follow him on LinkedIn, Instagram, or on Twitter and get inspired!
